The Center for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA) at the University of Nairobi seeks to recruit a Senior Research Fellow (Health Economics) to lead and contribute to the use of economic evidence in health policy and financing decisions. Duties and Responsibilities:


Participate in study-related sample collection,... including venipuncture (phlebotomy), and ensure handling, processing, and storage in strict accordance with the study protocol and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Receive, label, register, process, and safely store study biological specimens.
Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment; perform routine quality control checks; and troubleshoot technical malfunctions promptly.

Project Title: Climate influence on zoonoses at human-livestock-wildlife interfaces in the transboundary region between Kenya and Tanzania (ENHANCE)

Project description and objectives:


Climate and land-use changes significantly influence zoonosis emergence and spread. However, there are still knowledge gaps, and further research is needed to plan how to mitigate these two threats to... national and global health security.
The aim of the project is to better understand the dynamics between climate indicators and enhanced survival and transmission of emerging and neglected zoonotic pathogens at unique shared human-livestock-wildlife interfaces (water pans and bomas), and how this affects human and animal health and livelihoods.
This will provide invaluable data that will enable Kenya and Tanzania to improve their ability to prevent, prepare, and respond to emerging and re-emerging zoonotic threats.
In addition, the project will inform on the links between intensified activity around water pans and bomas, and dissolved organic carbon and greenhouse gas emissions, data which can be used in mitigation strategies against global warming.
Finally, with a focus on social conflicts, data will be provided which can help the two countries to better resolve conflicts associated with water scarcity.


The project is funded by DANIDA, Denmark, and is led by the University of Copenhagen.

The call:


Professor Dr. Daniel Olago, Department of Earth and Climate Sciences & Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation, University of Nairobi, seeks a PhD Applicant to conduct research on water availability, water quality, and greenhouse gas emissions from water pans (dams) in Kenya and Tanzania as part of a DANIDA-funded project, ENHANCE (Climate influence on zoonoses at human-livestock-wildlife interfaces in the transboundary region between Kenya and Tanzania). The PhD candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary and international team with partners from Denmark, Kenya, and Tanzania, focusing on water and health in the cross-border region.
The project will entail extensive field work in Narok county and periodic wide-spread surveys in Tanzania and Kenya. The candidate is expected to organize field campaigns, take responsibility for laboratory analyses, and interact with stakeholders and community members as needed. The candidate will also be expected to participate in project meetings, collaborate with other students and researchers on the project, and commit to the research full time in order to complete the PhD within the allocated funding period (4 years, starting from March 2025). The research will lead to publications in international, peer-reviewed journals.
The ideal candidate will have the following prerequisites: 1. An MSc degree or equivalent in natural sciences; 2. A background in aquatic science and/or biogeochemistry
Knowledge of climate change and carbon and nitrogen dynamics and fluxes in ecosystems; 4. Prior experience in field and laboratory work and statistical analysis;

This is a full-time PhD position with a duration of four years, starting in March 2025 and has a requirement for admission letter to join the PhD in Climate Change and Adaptation of the University of Nairobi (commencing September 2025). The student is required to be resident in Nairobi.

The Project
The University of Nairobi as legal host of the African Higher Education in Emergencies Network (AHEEN) is implementing a grant in support of refugees and displaced persons in five African countries to ensure their access and completion of higher education degrees courses and their transition to the labour market.
The Person

A suitable candidate must have a... minimum of a Master’s degree in any discipline relevant to AHEEN, a PhD degree is preferred.
Candidates must possess significant executive leadership experience and a proven record of achievement in Education in Emergencies (EiE) and Higher Education in Emergencies (HEiE).
Alongside experience of leading a complex network of implementing AHEEN members, suitable candidates must bring demonstrable experience to successfully lead the RDP Pathways Program through its launch phase. Experience working at the interface of academe and the humanitarian sector and demonstrated competence in implementing programs in emergency contexts respecting Core Humanitarian Standards HS and the INEE Minimum Standards is a requirement.
The successful candidate has the capacity to critically assess evolving fragile contexts and creatively adapt programming in collaboration with AHEEN RDP Pathways implementing members.
In addition, the successful candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrable ability to develop effective working relationships with a diverse set of members and stakeholders in the HEiE sector. The appointee must also demonstrate a clear commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in relation to every aspect of AHEEN’s activity and more widely as a leader in HEiE on the continent.

The Position

The Chief Executive Officer will provide leadership and direction for the AHEEN RDP Pathways Project and head the AHEEN RDP Pathways secretariat. The CEO will work closely with implementing members and the AHEEN network as a whole to advocate for the right to education of refugees and displaced persons, develop and monitor high quality programmes, ensure effective implementation of the AHEEN RDP Pathways strategy, drive implementation and manage all aspects of regular grant narrative and financial reporting for the grant holder as well as review reporting from implementing members.

Duties and Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for program management, implementation, communications, evaluation and safeguarding (in coordination with the AHEEN Steering Committee and the AHEEN Advisory Board)

Implement the AHEEN RDP Pathways vision across 10 implementation sites in 5 African countries
Act as liaison with the University of Nairobi leadership, programme coordinators in 10 implementation sites, the AHEEN network coordinator and the programme donor
Operate as a positive role model for the culture of the AHEEN RDP Pathways organization; be principled, inspirational and act with integrity
Develop a highly performing collaborative team; provide the project stakeholders with trusted feedback and advice, be creative in working in low-resource environments and willing to take measured risks.

Qualifications

The suitable candidate must have a minimum of a Master’s degree in any discipline relevant to the objectives of AHEEN, a PhD degree is preferred, and
Minimum five (5) years’ experience in humanitarian work and donor compliance/grants management, preferably related to EiE and HEiE;
Demonstrated competence with MS Word, Excel and any other Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software; mastery of responsible monitoring and evaluation (M&E) approaches and tools for fragile contexts, familiarity with learning management systems and EdTech for humanitarian contexts present an important added advantage;
Demonstrated knowledge and experience working within the humanitariandevelopment-peace nexus and the Global Compact on Refugees.

The Position
The position is domiciled in the Department of Clinical Medicine and Therapeutics in the Faculty of Health Sciencies, under the Fleming Fund Kenya Grant. This is a two (2) year project that will be conducted in several hospitals in Kenya to strengthen surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial use.

Duties and Responsibilites

Procurement:

 Liaise with UON’s procurement department to ensure project complies with policies and procedures.
 Collate the project’s requests into the annual procurement and disposal plan as per the approved budget for management review and approval. Upload this plan onto the EPMIS portal.
 Liaise with activity leads in preparing, terms of reference and specifications of items/service requested. Follow up with the UON Procurement department on issuance of RFQs and tender documents.
 While working closely with UON Procurement department, participate in evaluation of RFQ documents while tracking the project burn rate.
 Work closely with the UON Procurement department on processing of requisition, LPOs and all other support documents.
 Give frequent updates to the Team Lead on procurement progress of the various requests.
 Provide a detailed monthly Procurement Analysis Report to the Team Lead while identifying any challenges with suggested solutions.
 Ensure all procurement documentation are in compliance with government policies, the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act and the funder(s) requirement, competitive procurement and value for money.
 Support the NASIC/MOH in forecasting, quantification and costing of microbiology reagents and consumables for inclusion in the KEMSA list for public procurement.
 Support NASIC to develop a costed plan for procuring maintenance contracts and a strategy for obtaining government funding.
 Conduct an economic analysis with an aim of providing costs of running an AMR surveillance in resource limited settings such as Kenya.

Contract Management

 Assist the Team Lead in initiating procurement of service and maintenance contracts and ensure the appointed vendors are up to date with their schedules.
 Liaise with the UON Procurement Department to monitor and evaluate suppliers of the various goods, work and services for reliability.
 Liaise with user departments to ensure that contract renewal / termination of lease, framework contract and / or framework agreement are initiated three months prior to expiry of the period.
 Supervise outsourced service providers.

Financial Management

 Ensure that all vendors financial claims are supported by relevant documents before  submission for payment.
 Conduct a three-way match on all invoices forwarded to finance for payments. i.e. attach LPO/contract document; Goods Received Note or appraisal report and supplier’s invoices.

Asset Management

 Monitor stocks levels, equipment, assets and vehicles to minimize the risk of theft or unauthorized usage.
 Manage and maintain assets register by continuously updating new purchases and tagging them.
 Regular review of asset condition and submit recommendation at least biannually.
 Conduct biannual physical count and reconciliation of all assets with accounting ledger and submit to the Team Lead.

Vehicle and Driver Management:

 Ensure there is available transport to deliver supplies to sites as and when required.
 Ensure where institution drivers are deployed, they follow laid down policies and procedures while liaising with UON transport department.
 Ensure driver maintains the vehicle in good working condition which includes regular maintenance, do daily check list, cleanliness of the car both inside and outside daily.
 Ensure drivers give reports on any incident and/or accident as soon as possible but within amaximum period of 12 hours of the occurrence.
 Assist the Team Lead in procuring transport and logistics services.
 Ensure vehicle maintenance, repair and insurance is up to date and appropriate.

Office Management

 Effectively communicates with the projects management team any UON polices changes that directly affects the project implementation.
 Ensures proper storage, management and disposal of project’s record within required funder or UON/GOK regulations.
