OBED NAMANYA

Work experience
  • Roles, responsibilities and achievements
  • Planning and Reporting:
  • Coordinate in preparing supply chain sourcing plans for the sourcing period (seasonal plan), this I engage the field officers in drawing up the plans.
  • Compile monthly reports on the implementation and progress of activities.
  • Draw up monthly project budgets basing on the projected monthly activity plan, this I submit to the project supervisor for review and approval.
  • Training and Demonstration:
  • Supervise more than 10 field officers deployed in the communities
  • Conduct the training of trainers (TOT) who then train farmers and suppliers organized in groups (80 groups and more than 2000 farmers and subagents).
  • Training suppliers in quality handling and storage of coffee during drying and post drying storage.
  • Conduct inspections for suppliers’ stores for certification as approved stores for Maxtrace standard
  • I have introduced an input scheme to aid farmers in obtaining quality inputs such as stumping saws, fertilizers.
  • Market linkage and value chain development
  • Organize the farmers in the groups to aggregate their harvest and sell as a group so as to get a good price for their coffee
  • Provide market information to the agents and farmers through regular contact meetings and also through the group leaders.
  • Provide necessary support to the farmers and agents to acquire necessary tools and implements such as coffee pulpers for value addition.
  • Teach the agents/farmer group leaders the use of the mobile app Maxtrace which they use to track produce supply and training attendance.
  • Recommend suppliers/agents for crop finance to boost their ability to supply large volumes to the company.
  • Monitoring and Reporting:
  • I introduced training of suppliers in outturn analysis and cupping for them to appreciate the need to keep the quality of produce along the supply chain.
  • Carryout out suppliers store visits and report on the good storage practices being showcased.
  • Prepare periodical reports to track performance as a function of key performance indicators.
  • Supervise the process of data collection into the mobile app Maxtrace and ensure errors are minimized
  • Interpreted the data collected to inform compliance on adoption of Good Agricultural practices and agribusiness checkpoints.
  • Achievements:
  • I recommended the opening up of field buying stores to extend services closer to the farmers, this boosted the coffee volume sourced directly from farmer groups and increased traceability.
  • I recruited community based sourcing officers, attached them under a GLC field officer and this improved the company’s ground presence and boosted the coffee volumes bought.
  • I ensured all field buying records are properly filled in by the responsible sourcing chain actors to meet the traceability needs.
  • Continuous training of suppliers on quality analysis to promote one of the pillars of the GLC sustainable sourcing model
  • I encouraged the practice of intercropping (banana coffee system) this boosted farmers’ incomes (gross and net margins).

OBED NAMANYA

Work experience
  • As a field officer for BLOOM-Ibero, I was attached to two depot committees (DCs)/cooperatives i.e., BUKUYA DC and KAMAGA DC.
  • Main activities included;
  • Carrying out extensive mobilization of farmers to attend the field trainings,
  • Conduct the training and introduce the BLOOM products (fertilizer advance, cash advance and DC advance), explain to all farmers the benefits of joining the program while also emphasizing the terms and conditions, Convince and recruit new members onto the program.
  • Update farmers’ information and capture their request for the ‘BLOOM products’ using a mobile application-Field Buzz,
  • Follow up on farmers’ requests and participate in the approval or rejection process
  • Participate in the disbursement process and ensure clients are served to satisfaction, engage in both post disbursement monitoring and advance/credit recovery.
  • During the period that I worked with Ibero-Bloom I was able to maintain vibrant producer organizations (POs) by constantly engaging with the leaders, I was also able to revive POs that had become inactive and as a result the number of farmers on the program increased.
  • I mobilized extensively and was able to bring on to the program large scale coffee farmers from the neighboring cooperative of Kitumbi DC, this increased the total volume of fertilizer disbursed and subsequently the beneficiaries of the program.
