  • My coworker accidentally revealed they're earning significantly more than I am for the same role. Should I bring this up directly with my manager or leave salary comparisons out of the conversation?

Funnily enough, you don't have enough information to make that assumption that there is nothing more to the reason hes getting paid more. The... assumption is just as faulty as those who are sure that there IS a reason. Could be stellar performance compared to OP or could be simply hearty negotiation. We don't know.

Also, the fear is also based on the reality that your pay may be affected if you share your pay and find out you are actually the one being paid more compared to your co-workers. Everyone is not going to all of a sudden start sharing their pay with people who they don't know outside of work simply in the spirit of fairness. My pay is my pay. Your pay is yours. If you happen to overshare and I find out you're getting paid more. Well I'll make sure that I take care of me first (in fighting for myself) even if it affects you. Thats why you keep your mouth shut. Everyone is in it for themselves.
