    During a recent mentoring session, a client confidently stated, “I’d recruit for potential over experience.”

    I asked, “In what context?”

    This gave... them pause for thought eventually asking me:

    “What if I have three candidates—one with experience and potential, one with experience but no desire to grow, and one with little experience but strong potential? Who would you choose?”.

    It’s a great question, and my answer was:

    “It depends on the role, the business needs, and the company’s ability to support development.
    - If the role requires immediate impact, experience matters more.
    - If the role is evolving, potential could be more valuable.
    - If growth and learning are built into the role, someone with less experience but high potential could thrive.”

    Too often, both employers and job seekers focus on just one factor—either potential or experience—without considering what the role truly requires.

    Balance short term needs with long term vision….
