Honestly, there are far too many people who rely only on friends for job leads or clientele. Although its not a policy in some situations, I don't... recommend it. I am in the entertainment business and do many stagehand gigs and Audio Engineering gigs. Honestly, it is rare to get a substantially great paying gig through informal contacts. And, quite frankly, if I know you have personal problems, I am likely not going to hire you. Most of the professional gigs I get through the union or professional companies, with formal policies in place. I would rather just apply for a job, than hear about it through "So and so." In fact, personal relationships are a no-no. I don't want to have to party or sleep with someone, ya know! There is too much risk involved for making an unprofessional impression. more
