About

I am a Professor of Zoology with research interest in ecology, biology and control of medical and veterinary insect’s vectors and the parasites they transmit. Over the years, I have been studying the ecological and etiological factors that enhance the development, distribution and abundance and competence of vectors and their interactions and transmission of protozoans (Plasmodium, Ttrypanosome), helminths (Wuchereria, Onchocerca and Schistosoma) and arboviruses (Dengue, Yellow fever and other extant arboviruses) with a view to designing control and management strategies against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affecting over 200 million people in Africa. I have supervised and mentored over 40 postgraduate students on various researches pertaining to diversity and vectors competence of malaria and NTDs vectors which by extension, the determination of prevalence of vector borne pathogens and viruses infections in the populations across the northern Nigeria.. I am trained in molecular biology, vector genomics and proteomics and bioinformatics used as tools for the identification of the insect species complexities and isolation of parasites they carry and on the application of gene drive using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Presently, I am the Principal Investigator of Filariasis Research (lymaphatic filariasis / Onchoccerciasis) and Schistosomiasis Research of the World Bank-funded Africa Center of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology (ACENTDFB), which is a regional Center for research and training on NTDs. Similarly, I am the PI for Malaria Vectors Insecticide Resistance Monitoring of PMI Vectorlink Project for Kaduna State Sentinel Site. My collaborations locally and internationally with other researchers has produced several peer-reviewed publications from each project including mentoring younger colleagues[short summary]

"I highly recommend Prof. Iliya Ndams for his vast knowledge and professionalism. My supervisor, always ready to help his students"

  • Indeed, he is a true and astute academic, a Professor in active research in vector biology and infectious diseases of poverty, NTDs in particular. He... has been my lecturer and a mentor for a journey of three decades when I joined Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as an undergraduate student in 1993. more
