Dr Kozma Tamás

"It is my great honour and professional pleasure to recommend Professor Dr. Tamás Kozma as one of the most distinguished scholars in the fields of educational sociology, comparative education, and regional education policy in Central and Eastern Europe. His intellectual legacy, academic rigour, and pioneering methodological approach have had a profound and lasting impact on both Hungarian and international educational research.

Dr. Kozma's scholarly work spans over four decades and covers a wide range of educational issues, from the transformation of higher education after the political transitions in Central Europe, to the sociological analysis of minority education and the dynamics of educational regionalisation. His seminal book “Bevezetés a nevelésszociológiába” (Introduction to the Sociology of Education, 2001) remains a fundamental reference for generations of students and researchers alike, and his earlier volume “A nevelésszociológia alapjai” (1984) was among the first comprehensive attempts to institutionalise educational sociology within Hungarian teacher education.

In his monograph “Az összehasonlító neveléstudomány alapjai” (2006), based on lectures held at the University of Debrecen, Dr. Kozma successfully synthesised comparative methodologies and contextual analyses, enabling a nuanced understanding of educational systems in transition. His approach not only highlighted systemic inequalities but also illuminated the educational consequences of political and cultural shifts within Central Europe.

Furthermore, Dr. Kozma has played a pioneering role in researching regional educational development. His book “Regionális egyetem” (2002) and numerous studies on the regional effects of educational policy have anticipated today’s discussions on spatial equity, lifelong learning regions, and the societal impact of universities. His concept of the "learning region" (tanuló régió) has become widely cited, and his empirical studies contributed significantly to EU-funded research and policy development.

As a researcher, Dr. Kozma has been both theoretically grounded and empirically prolific. His contributions to academic journals such as Educatio, European Education, and the International Journal of Educational Development demonstrate his interdisciplinary acumen and his commitment to connecting Hungarian educational research to global debates.
