Deborah taught at Teikyo Loretto Heights University from August 1997 to December 2001 in the Department of Intercultural Studies. Teikyo at that time was ninety-nine
percent Japanese. In May 1999 and 2000, Ms. Burgess was awarded Faculty Member of the Year. This award is voted by the student body of Teikyo.
Deborah taught courses in the Department of Communication Arts and Sciences at Metropolitan State College of Denver from August 1996 to December 2006.
Since May 1993-2010 Deborah was employed at the University of Colorado at Denver in the Department of Communication and retired in August 2010. She was a full-time instructor and has taught courses such as fundamentals of communication, fundamentals of speech, interpersonal communication, intercultural communication in business, fundamentals of mass media, communication and gender, communication and diversity.
From June 1996 to December 1996, Deborah worked as a consultant for DEWS Human Resources Development, Inc., of Winter Park, Florida. She worked on a contract at Lucent Technologies in Allentown, Pennsylvania. facilitated sexual harassment classes at Lucent.
From June 2000 to August 2008 worked as a consultant at Western Management Development Center, Aurora, Colorado. She provided workshops in Creating an Inclusive Workplace. The participants in these workshops are General Service-rated, Supervisory and Senior Executive System employees from various federal agencies around the United States.
From May 2002 to January 2003 Deborah worked with the U.S. General Services Administration, Public Building Services (PBS). She conducted workshops for their Supervision and Group Performance Programs in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego, California.
In August 2002 Deborah was awarded the “Bright Ideas/Best Classroom Practices: Teaching that Enhances Learning at Metropolitan State College of Denver. Her Cultural Heritage Assessment was accepted for submission to an educational book for the college’s Academy of Teaching Excellence.
From February 2003 to May 2003 Ms. Burgess traveled to Beijing, China and taught three courses for the International College of Beijing, (ICB). Deborah taught two sections of communication and diversity and one section of interpersonal communication. Her students consisted of Chinese, Mongolian, Korean, and Nigerian students.
In March 2006 Deborah was invited by the President of Teikyo Loretto Heights University to teach two special-topics courses in the International Business Department during the summer semester 2006. The courses were diversity and communication in a global society and international business and leadership in the 21st century. During the fall semester she taught two courses: intercultural communication and diversity and communication in globalization. Teikyo has expanded its international base of graduate students and professionals from countries such as Russia, Vietnam, Japan, Mongolia, and China.
In August 2008 Deborah returned to Beijing, China as an instructor and Director of Faculty at the International College of Beijing. She taught courses in gender and communication, communication and diversity, interpersonal communication and business and professional speaking. Her responsibilities entailed working as a liaison between the administrations of the International College of Beijing and University of Colorado Denver.
Deborah taught First-Year Freshmen Program at the International College of Beijing during the fall 2010. She taught fundamentals of communication fall semester and presentation speaking spring semester each year. These courses are University of Colorado Denver courses but under the direction of the Chinese ICB Administration.
In the spring of 2011 Deborah conducted corporate training for China Construction Bank and China Southern Airlines at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing, China. Her students were top-level managers of these organizations who were instructed in American media to improve their English language and writing skills.
Deborah was employed with the University of the Rockies Denver, CO as an Academic Advisor III from August 2014-April 2019. She worked with students pursuing master’s and PhD’s in Psychology, Counseling, Education, Human Services and Organizational Development and Leadership. She worked at Spartan College of Aeronautics & Technology in Broomfield, CO from 2019-2020 as a Career Services Advisor collaborating with students pursuing employment with Aerospace, Business and Commercial Aviation as Aircraft Mechanics, Avionics Technicians and Pilots.
Deborah Co-facilitated a Diversity Equity & Inclusion training for The Center on Colfax Denver, Colorado from April 2021-June 2021. The workshops were specifically designed for the 50 years and older LGBTQ+ population. The workshop was part of the Racial Equity Learning Pilot Program for The Center which is a non-profit organization in the state of Colorado.
Deborah owns a small business specializing in communication coaching, diversity communication training and consulting, Business and Professional Speaking, and Public Speaking for private, educational, governmental, non-profit organizations and individuals. In July 2021 she obtained a 120-Hour Advance Certification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).
She has a third-degree black belt in Judo, swims 3 days per week, weight trains 2 days per week, Meditation/Yoga 7 days per week. Enjoys Jazz music, reading, watching westerns and red wine tasting.
