"I first met Christopher Gabriel in the spring semester of 2022 as both his tutor and supervisor as a volunteer at The NEST (Nassau Community College’s food pantry).

As Christopher’s tutor, I was impressed with his preparation and prior knowledge about the subject matter. For the most part, Christopher and I worked on his Biomedical Ethics class. In preparation for our discussions (which constituted a majority of our sessions), Christopher would have read the readings, prepared notes for arguments for and against the specific topic, reviewed his notes and made sure that I had any materials for the discussion ahead of time. His thoughts on the topic were well thought out and organized. He was open to any suggestions from me on how to make his argument stronger.

On Monday afternoons, Christopher would volunteer at the college’s food pantry. Christopher’s responsibilities included meeting me at my car to help with the unloading of donated food, helping put the food in designated areas and also, served as an “unofficial” peer advisor to the other student volunteers. Since Christopher is an older student, he has a wealth of experience and was open with the other student volunteers about what worked for him and what did not. His advice for learning to manage time was very relatable for the other student volunteers, who like Christopher are juggling classes, involvement on the campus along with the stress of physically getting to campus on a limited budget. Even after Christopher graduated from Nassau Community College, he still continued to volunteer at the food pantry.
