  • After the establishment of the Sri Lanka country office of BasicNeeds, my major role was the design and implementation of a fully extended Community Mental Health and Development Programme that facilitated social integration of persons with psycho-social disabilities in Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Provincial Councils and GOs and NGOs in the sector of social and economic development. As part of this participatory consultative action research programme with persons with psychosocial disabilities as key stakeholders, following interventions were designed, tested and scaled-up: Strengthening Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) model applied with people with disabilities to include persons with disabilities in socio-economic actions in the community (Partner – Navajeevana); Combining Grameen model of micro-credit with BasicNeeds livelihood approach for– inclusion of interested persons with psychosocial disabilities into existing Self-Help Groups (SHGs) established in micro-credit programme (Partner – GIDES); Community-led multi-sectoral Mental Health model that compliments existing mental health service structures developed ensuring the 10 principles of community-based services introduced by WHO (Partner – Ministry of Health, Southern Provincial Directorate of Health); Consultative Horticulture Therapy model as an effective tool to de-institutionalize the institutionalized persons with psychosocial disability (Partner – Mental Hospital Angoda); Family-based Therapeutic Livelihoods model for community inclusion of persons with psychosocial disability through economic support (Partners – Navajeevana, SEEDS & Sipsetha); Development-oriented Psychosocial Care for People affected by Tsunami & other Disasters that take the affected communities in collaboration with Southern Provincial Council in Sri Lanka; and Building capacity of persons with psychosocial disabilities to sensitize communities using life stories and advocate for their rights.
