About

As the project coordinator for the Lishe Bora Na Mama Silage project, Caleb Mutemi is involved in several key responsibilities and looks forward to expanding the impact of the project. Current Responsibilities: 1. Partnership Management: - Caleb collaborates with various partners including ChildFund, Pioneer Child Development Programme (PCDP), Hand in Hand Eastern Africa, EDCA, the Livestock Department and Packaging Industries Limited (PIL). - He oversees coordination between these partners, ensuring their roles are well-defined and that collaboration runs smoothly. 2. Farmer Engagement and Training: - Organizing engagement meetings with demo farmers and local agricultural extension officers to establish demonstration farms and educate on climate-smart agriculture, livestock management and silage production using the Mama Silage bag. - Conducting field visits and training sessions to demonstrate silage-making techniques to farmers, reaching hundreds of participants across multiple zones. 3. Project Reporting and Accountability: - Caleb is responsible for compiling detailed reports, which include accountability of funds, training outcomes, seed requisitions, heifer verification and beneficiary status for various project components. - He tracks the distribution of inputs such as Seeds, calf heifers and Mama Silage bags, ensuring that the right farmers benefit from the program. 4. Exchange Visits and Knowledge Sharing: - Organizing and participating in exchange visits, as such in Kieni West, which facilitated knowledge sharing between farmer groups and other project stakeholders. These visits include hands-on training on livestock production, silage-making and sustainable farming practices. 5. Project Expansion and Impact Monitoring: - Caleb monitors the adoption of Mama Silage technology, with a focus on farmers who have successfully implemented it. He tracks the number of silage bags purchased and used, alongside measuring farmer adoption rates and challenges. What to Look Foward to: 1. Scaling Up Farmer Participation: - Caleb aims to increase the number of farmers using the Mama Silage bags and improve adoption rates across new zones. This includes addressing the gaps in silage technology uptake and providing support to farmers through training and inputs. 2. Strengthening Demo Farms: - Expanding the reach and impact of demo farms where farmers can see first-hand the benefits of silage-making, livestock management and other climate-smart agricultural practices. This includes more training on calf rearing and improved feeding techniques. 3. Improving Financial and Resource Management for Farmer Groups: - Caleb is keen on providing formal financial management training to groups like Kilimo Hai Focus Group, who face financial challenges. He also plans to facilitate access to external support from organizations to ensure their farming and business ventures become sustainable. 4. Health and Livestock Welfare: - Ensuring that livestock welfare remains a priority by addressing issues like damp shed conditions, diseases and preventive livestock health practices. Caleb will continue to work with livestock officers and extension workers to promote healthier, climate-resilient livestock practices. 5. Pioneer Model Farm: - Caleb is working on establishing a model farm where farmers can learn improved farming methods, explore different seed varieties and integrate sustainable practices to boost food security and resilience in the face of climate change. Through these actions, Caleb's goal is to ensure the success of the Lishe Bora Na Mama Silage project, improve farmers' livelihoods, and contribute to long-term food security in the regions under his oversight.
