Work experience

Support scientists of the YIIFSWA-II project in implementing seed yam field production
activities.
Contribute in designing, planning, implementing of demonstration and on-station
experiments to demonstrate the benefits of using improved yam varieties and good quality seed.
Engage in field multiplication of disease and pest free seed yam (land preparation, field maintenance, harvesting, seed treatment), as well as oversee the maintenance of harvested
seed yam in storage.
Collect, analyze and report on data from activities on seed yam production on-station and
on-farm demonstration and trials.
Provide technical support on seed yam production to project partners including National
Agricultural Research and Extension Systems, as well as selected private seed companies,
seed producers, etc.
Contribute in the development, the production and dissemination of training documents
(flyers, newsletters, posters, training and extension manual etc.) to enhance quality seed
yam production.
Liaise with other projects members to ensure the proper documentation and coordination of
seed yam field production activities of YIIFSWA-II project.
Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor and Project Leader

Work experience

Support scientist of the CAY-seed project in implementing activities;
Contribute in designing, planning, implementing on farm /demonstration as well as on-station experiments to demonstrate the benefits of using clean seed yam;
Collate and analyze all data of the CAY-seed project;
Publish research output in peer-reviewed international journal articles;
Engage in multiplication of disease and pest free seed yam for experimental purpose as well as oversee the maintenance of quality seed by national partners;
Provide technical support to National Agricultural Research and Extension System in selected communities;
Contribute in the development and dissemination of training documents (flyers, newsletters, posters, training and extension manual etc.)
Liaise between other projects with similar objectives to ensure the coordination of related activities;
Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Work experience

Supervise all seed multiplication of three-way and top-cross hybrids as well as parents of these hybrids
Supervise all production sites for effective good quality seed multiplication of maize hybrids and open pollinated varieties.
Supervise all field research activities for Striga resistance and N use efficiency breeding programs
Supervise screening in the laboratory and green house and initiate new screening methods
Select, prepare fertilizer application, plant, pollinate and harvest
Organize sets of hybrid trials for shipment to partners in five countries and follow up dispatch
Organize required inputs, materials and supplies for all seed production sites
Handle Striga and low N tolerant germplasm in the breeding nursery
Assist to manage Drought Tolerant Maize for Africa, PASS funded and Harvest Plus-Maize projects
Carry out effective screening to transfer Imazapyr resistance (IR) gene into lowland adapted maize germplasm
Assist graduate students on their research projects
Assist scientists to maintain strict control of budget expenditures
Collect data, analyse and prepare reports
Supervise subordinates and hire temporary labor for various field operations
