MANAGER, REAL TIME OPERATIONS – (KET 4) ONE (1 POSITION) REF: KETRACO/5/1C/40/214/VOL II– B (02/2025) ON PERMANENT & PENSIONABLE TERMS

Reporting to the Senior Manager, System Control & Market Operations

Job purpose

This job is responsible for Managing operations of the Control Room to ensure a safe transmission network configuration and a cost reflective generation dispatch while in constant coordination with the interconnected Transmission System Operators (TSOs).

Key Responsibilities;


Forging necessary linkages with other departments and external stakeholders e.g Generators, Transmission Operators (TOs);
Managing the operations of the Transmission Operators (TOs) for safe and efficient
implementation of operational protocols, procedures and agreements holding from time to time;
Proposing divisional budget requirements to the Senior Manager;
Ensuring prudent utilization of divisional budget allocation;
Supporting sectoral electrical energy supply policy formulation;
Participating in operational fora/meetings with related stakeholders;
Participating in the Central safety authorization panel as a member;
Participating in formulation and review of electrical safety training curriculum and rules;
Reviewing standards, norms and procedures for System operations;
Ensuring compliance with Kenya National Transmission Grid Code & EAPP Interconnection Code during real- time system operation;
Taking responsibility for all manoeuvres on the transmission grid;
Developing and proposing training requirements for engineers in the division;
Setting and monitoring performance targets for the division.
Supervising power dispatch and system operations to ensure reliable and quality bulk power supply;
Coordinating the execution of all approved generation and transmission equipment maintenance requests;
Providing leadership during system restoration following partial or total system blackout;
Coordinating shifts and leave Rota for control room engineers;
Representing the department in operational meetings with stakeholders;
Liaising with relevant departments for updates and modifications required in the network;
Ensuring the division has an updated database of power system data useful and relevant for planning, simultaneous analysis and forecasting of the power system;
Identifying and mitigating against risks inherent with system operations and maintaining an updated risk register;
Scheduling drills – blackouts and operations from emergency control centre.


Qualifications & Skills required


Master’s Degree in a relevant field
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related from a recognised institution;
Registered professional engineer with EBK;
Member of IEK;
Leadership course lasting not less than four (4) weeks;
Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in system control & power dispatch of a national transmission power grid, three (3) of which should be at a senior engineer level.
