Primary Responsibilities


Student Transportation: Safely and punctually drive a school bus over designated routes, adhering to strict time schedules.
Safety and Regulations: Operate the vehicle in accordance with all traffic laws, federal/state regulations, and district policies, including proper use of safety equipment like seatbelts, flashing lights, and the stop arm.
Student Management: Maintain order and discipline among students on the bus, following district guidelines for student conduct and reporting behavioral issues to the proper school administrator.
Pre- and Post-Trip Inspections: Conduct thorough daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus (e.g., checking tires, brakes, lights, fluid levels, emergency exits) to ensure the vehicle is in safe working condition. Report any mechanical defects or need for repairs immediately.
Cleaning and Maintenance: Keep the interior of the bus clean and neat.
Emergency Procedures: Know and practice emergency evacuation procedures and administer basic first aid if necessary.
Communication: Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, school personnel, and the transportation department regarding schedules, delays, or student issues.
Documentation: Maintain accurate records of route times, mileage, fuel consumption, and student counts.


Required Qualifications and Credentials


Valid Driver's License: A standard, non-commercial driver's license is needed to start, but the main requirement is typically a:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL): Specifically, a Class A or Class B CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
Clean Driving Record: A driving history free of major violations or excessive points.
Background Check: Successful completion of a criminal background check and fingerprinting.
Medical Exam: Must pass a required Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination and drug/alcohol testing.
Training: Completion of all required state and local bus driver training programs.
Age: Must meet the minimum age requirement (often 21 or older).
