Main Responsibilities


Cultivate and nurture relationships with institutional funders (bilateral government donors, multilateral agencies and private foundations), development partners and other stakeholders. Leading particular priority funder/partner relationships with an account management approach.
Proactively identify and contribute ideas to develop new business development... opportunities and partnerships, particularly within the media development sector. 
Work with colleagues in the Central Business Development Team and wider teams (e.g. programmes, advisory, digital and research) to pursue and win global, regional and country specific opportunities, including frameworks and consortium bids. This includes leading the development of grant proposals and contract bids that are well designed, realistically budgeted, creative, editorially compelling, in line with BBC Media Action methodologies and approaches and cognisant of donor compliance requirements. 
Provide targeted support to country-specific bid development as necessary across a range of contexts and regions including Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA); Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa and the Middle East, and South and Southeast Asia.
Contribute to business development-related processes, tools and resources, knowledge sharing and policy development across the organisation.
Work with cross-disciplinary teams to raise the profile and visibility of BBC Media Action with external actors.
Support regional and country teams by providing information on new business opportunities, along with organisational tools for others to use in business development.


Are you the right candidate?


Proven ability to raise funds from institutional donors, including bilateral government donors (e.g. UK FCDO, USAID, European Commission) and private foundations. Experience with USAID and US contractors/INGOs highly desirable. 
Proven track record of building and managing external relationships with international development donors and partners.
Strong technical understanding of the communications for development sector, including media development and social and behaviour change communications (SBCC) - across our impact areas of stronger democracies; a safer, more habitable planet (include climate mitigation and adaptation); and inclusive societies.
Proven track record in designing and successfully winning effective media development and SBCC programmes. Track record of this specifically in the climate sector highly desirable.
Excellent and well-practiced communication (spoken, written, listening), interpersonal and influencing skills with the ability to bridge business and cultural differences.
Significant experience coordinating colleagues to shared goals, operating under tight timescales and managing competing priorities. more

Job Introduction

We’re looking for an engineer to work on our media supply chain observability product called Observatron.   The product is central to the BBC’s ambition to monitor and report on its end-to-end media supply chain.

The BBC’s media supply chain involves video, audio, image and metadata deliveries which feed a network of national and international services which are consumed by... our audiences on tv, radio and digital platforms.  Media and metadata flow through a complex ecosystem of products which have extensive internal monitoring data.

Over the past year, the Observatron product has started to improve the visibility around how, and how quickly, our content flows through our supply chain.  It does this by collecting and processing events from source systems and linking those events to create data and visualisations showing how individual media assets have moved through the chain. 

We’re looking to recruit a full stack engineer to work with an architect and a product manager to work on further Observatron enhancements.

Observatron built on a number of AWS services.  It uses:


SQS, Kinesis and SNS to receive data.  
AWS Lambda, EC2 and Containerised Services to process and convert the inbound events
A Postgres RDS service and S3 for persistence
Amazon Managed Service for Apache Flink for real time stream analysis and AWS Glue for ETL workflows
AWS CDK/Code Pipeline for building our services. 
Our components are primarily built using TypeScript, but we also have components written in Java and Python.
The observatron UI uses Fastify and Vite 


We’re looking for an engineer who’s worked with a substantial number of the above technologies, or who has worked with similar technologies in other cloud environments.   You will be the sole developer on the project and as such will need to be confident in your ability to use these services, or pick up knowledge of these services rapidly.

Main Responsibilities

Reporting to the News Editor, you will be responsible for producing content for all output with News Content correspondents, and sometimes working with WS correspondents and reporters in Africa. You will act as a point of editorial reference for journalists and correspondents, providing editorial leadership as required.
 You will exercise your editorial judgement,... creativity and flair to make original and compelling multimedia content.
 You will also offer ideas for daily output and future diary events, suggesting new angles on existing stories and putting forward stories not yet covered.

Job Purpose

The role works as part of a shift working team providing 24 hour operational support, incident management and stakeholder communication for the systems used to produce, publish and serve content for a range of BBC platforms.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

 Use a diverse range of monitoring tools to identify and diagnose complex service impacting issues across a... range of technologies and platforms
 Leads the response to service disruption and supports proactive measures to prevent recurrence.
 Responsible for studio and broadcast technologies deployed across BBC sites in East Africa.
 Accurate logging of incidents including technical response and action taken. 
 Implementing contingency procedures in response to planned or unexpected events.
 Thorough handover of information across shift changes.
 Keep informed of operational changes ensuring that individual and team actions are in line with best practice.
 Good communication skills; Able to explain information to technical and non-technical audiences. This includes communications to large, diverse audiences following incidents and acting as the point of contact for operational management.
