Role Overview


The Financial Controller will be responsible for overseeing the financial health of OBSIDIAN, ensuring the firm’s financial operations are managed with precision and creativity.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting:


Prepare and present accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and analyses to management.
Oversee and manage the firm’s margin accounts, ensuring proper tracking, reconciliation, and optimisation.
Manage the firm’s tax fund, ensuring full compliance with regulatory obligations while optimising tax efficiency.
Supervise the payroll process, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and alignment with company policies.
Ensure robust internal controls are in place to safeguard the firm’s assets and maintain financial integrity.


Audit & Compliance:


Lead and coordinate internal and external audits, ensuring the timely resolution of audit queries.
Ensure all statutory, tax, and regulatory filings are up-to-date and compliant with Nigerian financial regulations.
Maintain strong relationships with tax authorities, auditors, banks, and other key external partners.


Strategic Financial Planning:


Partner with leadership to design and implement financial strategies that align with OBSIDIAN’s growth objectives.
Identify opportunities for cost optimisation and revenue enhancement through creative financial structuring.
Design and implement innovative funding models and financial management processes to support strategic initiatives.


Entrepreneurial & Creative Input:


Apply a creative, solutions-driven mindset to financial challenges, bringing innovative approaches to budgeting, fund management, and financial forecasting.
Think like a business owner, proactively identifying risks, efficiencies, and opportunities to drive value creation.

Qualifications & Requirements


Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s degree is a plus).
Professional certification: ACA, ACCA, CFA or equivalent is mandatory.
Minimum of 7 years’ experience in a senior finance role, preferably within financial services, investment banking, or advisory sectors.
Proven experience handling margin accounts, tax fund management, payroll, internal controls, and audits.
Exceptional analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
Strong command of Nigerian tax laws, financial regulations, and accounting standards.
Proficiency in financial software and advanced Excel skills.
Entrepreneurial mindset with a track record of applying creative thinking to solve financial problems.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment and work directly with senior leadership.

Key Responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:


Organise and maintain SE’s daily schedule - booking appointments and coordination of any travel logistics.
Keep the SE well informed of upcoming commitments and responsibilities, following up appropriately. 
Assist the SE with organising regular team meetings, training days, team bonding activities, etc. Use own initiative to solve problems as they arise.
Manage ad-hoc and special projects, events from idea stage to fruition.
Interact and communicate professionally with high-level corporate organisations and high profile individuals, as an extension of the SE.
Prioritise urgent matters and proactively manage any conflicts efficiently and effectively, and following-through on projects until the successful completion, often with deadline pressures.
Help to manage communication between the SE and the wider team, promoting team work and collaboration.
Handle incoming documents relating to live transactions. Liaise with and support the work of the wider team.
Manage some of the SE’s personal tasks on his behalf.
