A relevant and effective recommendation for job seekers in the modern world from employers, psychologists and HR managers is:
Don’t be afraid to ask questions during the interview – it will present you as an engaged and motivated professional.
We discussed the practical application of this advice in our chat. Here are some responses from interviewees and professionals (stylistics preserved as is).
Joseph Maar: Your questions are fine. Build a large network, most job offers come through or because of that.
Belita Mengo: Being open in interviews is the best i did for myself. It shows how committed you are to that job, however align your openness to the job in the room.
Rebecca Dotson: I wouldn’t necessarily ask about promotion or I might rephrase it to say opportunities for growth.
Sarah Cardozo Duncan: The question you asked about promotion in an interview could make the interviewer think that you were not interested in the job you were interviewing for. A suggestion for questions in an interview would be:
1. Describe the culture of the organization (this will help you decide if it is the right fit for you).
2. This candidate will be successful in three months, six months, and a year, if what?
Lilian Kendi: It’s not wrong to ask….it’s better to speakout.
Tom Obukanga: It’s not bad to ask questions in an interview but let the questions be relevant to the position you are being interviewed for. In other case, I feel it’s awkward to ask a question on position you were not being interviewed for. If it’s a promotion, let it be in line with your skills and position you are being interviewed for. Otherwise, keep applying for jobs. Your job is around the corner.
Alex Tee: I have applied for 1000 jobs in the last 5 years. I’ve been to probably 10 interviews, and I realized that the experience and qualification on the resume is only 50% of getting the job. Whether the interviewer likes your face or look is the other 50%. So I know this to be true.
Charles van Blommestein: Absolutely not is it wrong to ask questions… especially at Interviews. The more-questions you ask shows your interest in the position – and that you are eager to always learn.
Are you hesitant to ask the employer questions during an interview? Do you use feedback to improve your resume and increase your chances of landing your desired position?
