From mistakes to mastery: a job interview guide

Common mistakes job seekers make – and how to avoid them:

1. Only checking the company website. Many candidates forget to research the market, competitors, and the company’s products.

• Tip: Take time to understand the company’s position in the market, its products, culture and key competitors.

2. Telling your whole career story in response to “Tell me about yourself.” Long, unfocused answers can lose the interviewer’s attention.

• Tip: Prepare a clear 1–2 minute summary that highlights your most relevant experience and skills.

3. Not preparing for common interview questions. Assuming your achievements speak for themselves is a missed opportunity.

• Tip: Practice answers to common questions and be ready to share specific examples.

4. Not asking any questions during the interview. Saying “everything’s clear” can seem disinterested.

• Tip: Prepare thoughtful questions for the recruiter, hiring manager and team.

5. Asking about salary too early. Leading with money before showing your value can hurt your chances.

• Tip: First, communicate what you bring to the role. Then discuss your salary expectations.

6. Overpromoting or underselling yourself. Either extreme can come across as unprofessional.

• Tip: Be honest and confident. Prepare for salary discussions from the first interview.

7. Sharing personal problems when asked about strengths or weaknesses. This can feel off-topic and unprofessional.

• Tip: Learn about the company’s values and align your answer to them.

8. Thinking hiring is only about matching your experience to the job description. It’s more than just a checklist.

• Tip: Treat recruiters and HR as partners. Ask for tips on how to prepare.

9. Not updating your resume or LinkedIn after interviews. Even if the interview felt great, there’s always room to improve.

• Tip: Ask for feedback, refine your materials and address any gaps.

10. Waiting on one company to respond. Putting all your hopes on one interview is risky.

• Tip: Apply to and interview with several companies at once (ideally 2–5).

Good luck with your job search.
