Staying calm in an interview: Breathing methods that work

Staying calm during an interview is not easy for everyone, even if you are well-prepared, have a clear understanding of your role in the company you’re aiming to join, and have a strong resume.

Breathing techniques can be very helpful when you feel nervous or start to panic. However, it’s not always the best option to breathe into a paper bag.

Here are some practical tips shared by Gainrep users (stylistics preserved as is):

Annessa Morrison: “Four count method. Count a slow 4 and make inhale take that long. Then stay and count 4. Breath out count 4 make it last whole 4. Hold 4 repeat. Saying “four alligator” will take a full second and give you the timing. This calms amazingly. Good luck.”

Frank Bublitz: “Think of your interview as going to play in a FIFA Futbol Tournament. The other country’s fans are going to harass you and try to cause fear in you.

Think of what you need to accomplish. Your mind might wander, so you can literally tell yourself “Stop” and refocus.

Also don’t forget the guy who asked how to get to Carnegie Hall for a concert. The answer is “Practice, practice, practice”. Best wishes to you!”

Jennifer Madsen: “Try this simple reset…. Inhale two times without an exhale…. Then exhale.(In…In…Out. …) 8x

Then do the reverse. Exhale, exhale….. then inhale.(8x)

You will feel your nervous system calmdown.”

Brougham Brougham: “You can use biofeedback technique to bring you down from that anxiety.

Sit down and rest your arms on the armrest of the chair or just let them hang. Close your eyes and take a deep breathe through your nose but let your stomach expand as you breathe the air in, not your chest…

You can use imaging to help you escape your immediate surroundings. It really works!”

Prana Monde: “Get a bottle of the essential oil of Laurus nobilis, also called Laurel Laurel… When faced with an unavoidable challenge and to emerge as conqueror, apply 2 drops on your inner wrists, hold them together in front of your nose, and inhale long and very deep for 2 to 3 times successively.”

And what calming techniques do you use?
